Michele Giannattasio Lecture Series presents 'Pizza Shop: An Italian-American Dream'

Brothers Charlie and Fred Osso emigrated from Calabria in the mid-1960s. For more than forty years they have run the family-friendly Rudy's Ristorante & Pizzeria in Closter, New Jersey. Charlie is the serious and detail-oriented manager, while Fred is the jovial and passionate chef. Now in their seventies, they are facing relocation and the construction of a new restaurant. Director Antony Osso—Charlie's son—explores in this film the many ways a local business, established and nurtured by post-World War II immigrants, can serve as a hub for a community.

Presented by filmmaker Antony Osso.
Followed by a round table conversation with the owners of Best Pizza, Williamsburg Pizza, and Carmine and Sons Pizzeria.

This event is held in conjunction with the St. Nicks Alliance.
It is free and open to the public.

The fill will be screened at the
Swinging Sixties Senior Center
211 Ainslie Street
Williamsburg, Brooklyn 11211

Celebrate Italian-American Day & Columbus Day Together!

We invite you to share a special day celebrating both Italian-American Heritage Day and Columbus Day with a special ‘al fresco’ Lunch Buffet on our shady terrace overlooking the park. Also invited are some of the regions fine olive oil producers to taste and buy their olive oils. We'll also be showing a special film: “PIZZA SHOP, An Italian-American Dream” during the event.

Italian-Americans are one of the largest groups to immigrate to America and were the single largest group of immigrants to come through Ellis Island. In celebration of the Italian-American experience, we will take a contemporary look at the Italian-American dream through the story of the Osso brothers who have run a successful Pizzeria in New Jersey for 40 years. Charlie and Fred Osso immigrated from Calabria in the 1960s and ran Rudy’s Ristorante and Pizzeria, one of northern New Jerseys most beloved restaurants. Through their humor and hard work their journey reminds us of our own immigrant pasts which so richly define America.

Another tradition of our celebration is the super food, ‘olio d’oliva’ (olive oil), also known as “liquid gold,” an integral part of the Italian diet! We encourage our guests to visit the featured California olive oil producers we’ve invited to this special event.

And - don’t forget your appetite! At 1:45 a bountiful Italian-style buffet lunch including wine by Andis Wines wil be served on our Italian Center terrace facing the lovely Carmichael Park.

PIZZA SHOP introduces us to Charlie and Fred Osso, brothers from Italy, who have run
a successful pizzeria for over 40 years. Now in their seventies, they’re facing construction of a new restaurant and encroaching old age. But retirement is a dirty word to these workhorses: Charlie is serious and detail-oriented, with a soft center, while Fred is lighthearted and easygoing. PIZZA SHOP explores how a Mom-and-Pop shop can be a hub for a community, the
sacrifices parents make for their children, and what it means for immigrants to live out
the American dream.

What is an immigrant’s typical experience in America? What does he sacrifice, and what does he gain? “Pizza Shop” provides one family’s answer to those questions, lovingly illustrating what it means for Charlie and Fred Osso, immigrant brothers from Calabria, Italy, when they live out the American dream. Through hard work, resilience, and the opportunities provided in the U.S., they've thrived, with the Osso siblings having run a successful pizzeria and restaurant in a strip mall in northern New Jersey for nearly 40 years. Now in their 70s, they’re facing a forced relocation and encroaching old age. But retirement is a dirty word to these workhorses. With humor and compassion, filmmaker Antony Osso (Charlie’s son) details the sacrifices that parents make for their children.
